The Walking Dead Recap “Conquer”

Overall I found the fifth season to be quite strong. I loved the premiere, and the Carol heavy stories. I even got really into Beth’s story in the hospital and I continue to find the possibilities of Alexandria intriguing. But it’s no secret that The Walking Dead has more characters than it knows what to do with at any given time. Even after a particularly bloody season loosing Bob, Beth, Tyreese, and Noah in quick succession this second half saw many characters fall to the background in a pretty big way. Bob came back this week with a significance that was not in any way equal to his actual screen time or story in recent episodes, and Morgan popped out of the wilderness to finally pay off his brief appearance way back in the mid-season finale.

The Walking Dead “Try”: Getting By With Help From My Friends

Rick’s big breakdown was the “moment” in “Try”. Rick has always been, and will continue to be the centrepiece. But what I love about The Walking Dead is its (hit and miss) ability to nurture the peripheral characters giving them rich and interesting stories…and then sometimes killing them.

The best example of this is the work the show has done with Carol. Playing the long game from season one, building her into one of the show’s most complex characters through her tumultuous arc involving loss, change, and self-realization of sorts. She is a completely different person than the Carol we met in season one, but everything she is now is true to who she was and the experiences she’s had along the way.

But “Try” wasn’t about Carol and it was Sasha’s, not Rick’s, story I was invested in.

The Walking Dead “Four Walls and a Roof”: What Are We Doing Here?

After two weeks of Carol kicking ass, taking names and all around being the best damn character on The Walking Dead, “Four Walls and a Roof” was sadly, Carol free. That being said – it was still an excellent episode of post-apocalyptic TV. The Bob mystery finds a resolution, and the group once again finds itself pushing the boundaries of what they need to do to survive versus what survival has done to their humanity.

The Walking Dead “Strangers” Review: Still All About Carol

The best part of “Strangers” must have been when Rick had the good sense and courtesy to ask Carol if it would be okay for the group to join her. It’s refreshing to see Rick, who has been the defacto leader for so long, realizing that he’s only here now because of Carol, the woman he banished and sent off on her own not so long ago. She graciously accepted the group back, because of course she did.

The Walking Dead “No Sanctuary” Review: Carol is Everything

“The Walking Dead” has a fantastic track record for season premieres and finales. “No Sanctuary” certainly continues to live up to that. Putting Carol front and center was a brilliant decision. She was one of the brightest spots last season, with “The Grove”, the episode that focused on Carol and Tyreese’s experiences as one of the season’s high points so having her carry so much of the season premiere seems like an obvious choice.
